2014-07-03: Important note for people using Firefox 30.0 or newer on a Mac: In version 30.0, Mozilla made a change to the default security configuration that broke the authentication used to log in to many pages and applications, including SharePoint. Details, and the simple fix, can be found here.
Download permissions. The first time that you try to open a document with restricted permission, you must connect to a licensing server to verify your credentials and to download a use license. The use license defines the level of access that you have to a file. This process is required for each file that has restricted permission. Microsoft Document Connection for Mac OS enables you to easily work with documents stored in a SharePoint site. In Windows, as you know, there is a client tool called Microsoft SharePoint Workspace 2010 which enables you to share and work on not only a document library but also a list. 'MS Document Connection is installed on a Mac with OS Yosemite running. All updates have been applied for both Office for Mac 2011 and Document Connection as this is an Office 365 account user. Document Connection is installed and has been successfully connected to the correct Office 365 Sharepoint site. Office Professional Plus 2013 is the future of productivity. Office Professional Plus 2013 includes Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, OneNote, Access, Publisher, and Lync. Microsoft Office will fail to open a document via insecure connection with Basic authentication. For a workaround please see the following articles. In case of MS Office Windows: You cannot open Office file types directly from a server that only supports Basic Authentication over a non-SSL connection with Office applications.
1. Use Internet Explorer for best results with SharePoint 2007
SharePoint 2007 works best with Microsoft’s Internet Explorer (IE) browser. Other browsers allow you to log in and view, upload, and download files with basic functionality, but only IE allows you to edit files directly from the browser, upload multiple files, open a document library in Windows Explorer, or edit a library or list in datasheet mode. If you have access to IE you’ll find that it provides a much better SharePoint experience. If you have IE installed on a Windows-based PC but generally prefer to use Firefox or Chrome as your browser, you also have the option of installing IE Tab, which you can configure to display SharePoint pages in IE within a tab in your preferred browser.
2. Use Microsoft Document Connection for Mac
Instructions for using Microsoft Document Connection to connect to a SharePoint site from a Mac running Office 2008 SP2 or Office 2011
- In your Applications folder, find Microsoft Office 2011 and open the folder
- Double click on Microsoft Document Connection
- When it launches, click on Add Location and select Connect to a SharePoint Site
- In the Address box, enter the address of the SharePoint site to which you like to connect. E.g., to connect to Information Services & Technology’s SharePoint site, you would enter:
- Click the Connect button
- When prompted for credentials, enter the following:
- ADyour_login_name (make sure you enter AD and a back-slash before your login name)
- As an alternative, most people can now enter your_login_name@bu.edu
- your regular BU Kerberos password
- ADyour_login_name (make sure you enter AD and a back-slash before your login name)
3. Configure your Windows-based PC for single sign-on to SharePoint
Read these instructions to eliminate the need to log in to SharePoint.
4. Resolve “Access Denied” errors
Most common “Access Denied” problems when logging in to SharePoint can be resolved easily by following these two tips.
a. You may need to specify your account’s domain: AD
When you log in to a SharePoint site at Boston University, you may need to prepend “AD” to your login name (without the quotes, and be sure to use a back-slash rather than the more common forward-slash). Example:
- ADfred
There are situations where you won’t need to prepend this domain designation, but it NEVER hurts. For suggestions on how you may be able to eliminate the need for logging in altogether, see “Enabling single sign-on to SharePoint.” As an alternative, most people can now enter your_login_name@bu.edu.
b. Start at the entry point (URL or link) specified
The other common cause for access denial is trying to begin your connection to SharePoint higher up in the “tree” than the starting point where you have been granted access. You won’t be able to log in at the top level and work your way down. Make sure you begin your SharePoint session by entering the URL or clicking on the link you were given.
-->Applies to:Office for Mac, Office LTSC for Mac 2021, Office 2019 for Mac
There are two basic ways that you, as an admin, can deploy Office to Mac users in your organization:
Provide your Mac users with the installer package file, and have them install Office for themselves
Download the installer package file to your local network, and then use your software distribution tools to deploy Office to Mac devices
If you have a Microsoft 365 (or Office 365) plan, you can provide your Mac users with instructions on how to download and install Office themselves. To install Office on a Mac, a user has to be an administrator on the device or know an administrator account name and password.
But, if you deploy Office for your Mac users, you have more control over the deployment, including which users get Office and when. To plan your deployment, review the following information.
Note
For information about upgrades, see Upgrade an installation of Office for Mac.
Download Office for Mac to your local network
The easiest way to download Office for Mac, and ensure you're always getting the most current version and build, is to download directly from the Office Content Delivery Network (CDN) on the internet. Here are the links to the installer packages for the Office suite, which contains all the applications.
- Office for Mac (Microsoft 365 or Office 365 subscription plan)
- Office LTSC for Mac 2021 (volume license)
- Office 2019 for Mac (retail or volume license)
The same installer package can be used for Office for Mac, Office LTSC for Mac 2021, and Office 2019 for Mac. How you activate the product determines which features are available to your users.
Note
- If you have a Microsoft Services Provider License Agreement (SPLA), review this information.
- Support for Office 2016 for Mac ended on October 13, 2020. For more information, see End of support for Office 2016 for Mac.
- The installer packages for Office LTSC for Mac 2021 and for Office 2019 for Mac aren't available on the Volume Licensing Service Center (VLSC).
Deploy Office for Mac to users in your organization
Office for Mac uses the Apple Installer technology for installation. That means you can use the software distribution tools that you normally use to deploy software to Mac users. Some of the most common tools are Jamf Pro, Munki, and AutoPkg. You can also use Apple Remote Desktop.
Important
To help improve security, Office for Mac has implemented Apple app sandboxing guidelines. This means that you can't customize the app bundle before or after you deploy Office. Don't add, change, or remove files in an app bundle. For example, even if you don't need the French language resource files for Excel, don't delete them. This change prevents Excel from starting. Even though you can't customize app bundles, you can configure preferences for each app.
